FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Silver Spring, MD -- CCCA President and Founder Susan Weiner, PhD, participated in the 2010 Annual Investigator Meeting of the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (CCSS) on June 9-10th in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Dr. Weiner serves on the External Advisory Committee of the CCSS, a collaborative project funded through a grant provided by the National Cancer Institute to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The CCSS is a research resource made up of data from 20,346 childhood cancer survivors diagnosed before age 21 between 1970 and 1986, with a control group of 4,000 sibling survivors. The cohort is currently being expanded to include 14,000 survivors diagnosed between 1987 and 1999.

The purpose of the CCSS is to better understand the long-term effects of cancer and its treatment in order to educate survivors, improve follow-up care, and help design treatment protocols to increase survival and minimize harm. These goals align with CCCA's mission to achieve access to less toxic and more effective therapies, expand resources for research and specialized care, and to address the unique needs and challenges of childhood cancer survivors and their families.

The CCSS website includes data and analysis, published research, concept proposals, and more.

Following the Annual Investigator Meeting, medical and health professionals participated in the 11th International Conference on Long-Term Complications of Treatment of Children and Adolescents for Cancer, a two-day symposium that this year focused on the topic of obesity.
