Health Care Reform Legislation - March 2010
Enactment of the comprehensive health care reform legislation has established a number of safeguards and opportunities of great importance to pediatric cancer patients and pediatric cancer survivors. For example, a major concern of pediatric survivors has been eligibility for health insurance as they reach maturity (no preexisting conditions), access to coverage during and following their treatment, and monetary caps on health-related expenses. These potential problems have now been eliminated. In addition, the legislation supports a number of research opportunities and pilot projects that can benefit pediatric cancer patients and survivors. The Children's Cause will be focusing on ways to ensure that these potential benefits are realized in a manner that fully benefits the pediatric cancer community.
